What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos? A Vancouver Photographer’s Guide

What’s the best age for newborn photos? Here’s the real window — from 6 days to 4 weeks — explained by a Vancouver studio with 15+ years of newborn photography experience.

So, what’s the best age for newborn photos? If you ask us, it’s 6 to 20 days old — and there’s a real reason that window keeps coming up across every photographer’s advice.

Babies at this stage are still deeply sleepy, their skin hasn’t broken out yet, and they naturally curl into those tucked-in, womb-like poses that make newborn photos so timeless. Newborns spend most of their day sleeping in this early stretch, which is exactly why this window produces those calm, curled poses newborn photography is known for. After about three weeks, babies start stretching out, their awake windows get longer, and those classic curled poses become much harder to capture safely.

Newborn photos at 3 weeks and 4 weeks — is it too late?

Not even close. Newborn photos at 3 weeks are still very doable — babies are just a little more alert, so the session leans more toward awake, wide-eyed shots and family portraits rather than deep-sleep poses. By newborn photos at 4 weeks, your baby is likely holding more weight and is noticeably stronger, which changes the session style again, but it’s far from “too late.” It just means the photographer should adjust the approach rather than trying to force an early-newborn look onto a baby who’s moved past it.

Is one month too old for newborn photos?

This is one of the questions we hear most, and the honest answer is no. At one month, you won’t get the same tightly curled, days-old poses, but you’ll get something just as special — more personality, more awake expressions, and often your baby’s first real smiles starting to show. Some of our favorite sessions have happened right around this stage.

What if baby comes early, late, or needs NICU time?

Totally normal, and it doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. If your baby arrived early, we often wait until closer to their original due date so they have more newborn features. If they came later than expected or needed extra time in the NICU first, we build the session around their actual timeline, not a calendar.

How we approach timing at JaNa Photography

After 15+ years photographing newborns across Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey, one thing we always tell expecting parents: book during pregnancy, not after birth. Reserving your spot around 30 weeks pregnant means we can stay flexible and adjust your date once baby actually arrives, instead of scrambling to find an open slot during that narrow window.

Whatever stage your baby is at right now, there’s a version of newborn photos that works for them. If you’re expecting or your little one has already arrived, explore our newborn photography sessions and we’ll help you find the right timing for your family.
