There’s something incredibly heartwarming about capturing the bond between a newborn baby and the family dog. As a photographer, I’ve seen how these sessions turn into timeless memories. But let’s be honest adding a dog to a newborn shoot means a little extra planning. The good news? With the right preparation, it can be a smooth and peaceful experience for everyone involved (especially your baby!).
Here are my top tips to help you prepare for a successful newborn session with your pup:
1. Introduce Your Baby and Dog in Advance
Before your session, give your dog a chance to gently get to know your baby. Let them sniff blankets the baby has used or spend calm, supervised moments together. Familiarity helps reduce anxiety during the shoot and creates a more natural bond in photos.
2. Walk Your Dog Before the Session
A tired dog is a calm dog! Taking your pup for a good walk or play session before coming to the studio can help them release excess energy and settle down more easily when it’s time to pose.
3. Bring Plenty of Treats
Treats are a photographer’s secret weapon when dogs are involved. They help with focus, positioning, and rewarding good behavior. Bring your dog’s favorite snacks to keep them motivated and cooperative during their time in front of the camera.
4. Keep Your Dog Leashed (Until It’s Their Turn)
For everyone’s safety, keep your dog leashed at all times during the session unless the photographer asks you to let them off for a specific shot. Even the most well-trained dogs can get overly excited or nervous in a new space.
5. Be Honest About Your Dog’s Personality
If your dog tends to be jumpy, overly playful, or doesn’t do well around babies, let your photographer know before the session. A good photographer will plan accordingly for example, by photographing the baby and dog separately and combining the images safely through Photoshop. This way, you’ll still get the sweet image you’re dreaming of, without any risk to your little one.
6. Bring Comfort Items
If your dog has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along. Familiar scents can help them feel more at ease in the studio. The same goes for your baby a cozy wrap or pacifier can help keep them calm between shots.
Including your dog in your newborn session is a beautiful way to celebrate your whole growing family. With a little planning, a few treats, and open communication, the session can be peaceful, safe, and full of love.
